RENEW
RENEW is a world wide program that began in New Jersey. It has been adopted by the Archdiocese of OKC and is to take place in all parishes. It is a three year program Renew’s central focus is faith sharing in small groups. Each group meets for a six week season twice each year. The first season began in October of 2002. The second season will be during lent of 2003. These sessions will provide time for reflection and sharing, for mutual support, for prayer, for action, for learning and for celebration. It is a marvelous time for gathering in small communities of Christians around the Word of God, to search together and support on another. We need one another to celebrate the ways God is active in our lives and in our world. All we need do is to accept and live God’s great love.RENEW is a thorough spiritual renewal and evangelization process designed for parish life in the 21st century. It incorporates themes suggested by Pope John Paul II for pastoral life in this new millennium and implements his call for a new evangelization. RENEW offers excellent evangelization materials and thorough trainings that give explicit directions on who are the best prospects for outreach, and how and when to approach them. This is done along with the content of the good news message we share. The RENEW process provides a direct means of implementing 24 of the specific objectives and 83 of the strategies recommended by the U.S. Bishops in their evangelization document “Go and Make Disciples.” RENEW is carried out
in parishes over three years, following a period of preparation. The flow
of RENEW activity is shown below:
January - September
October - Mid November Lent
October - Mid November Lent
October - Mid November Each Season is made up of a six-week reflection on the major themes provided by the Holy Father for the third millennium. With each Season, the major theme is broken down into weekly themes. Parishioners experience these in five ways that enable spiritual renewal activity for everyone in the parish:
In addition to the many strengths of the original RENEW, RENEW provides a diocesan priests' retreat, a strong follow through for small communities through the provision of small community materials and the development of Parish Core Communities for small community development, a focused outreach to young adults, a parish mission and an ecumenical component. RENEW International offers on-location trainings for dioceses and clusters of parishes anywhere in the world. A diocesan RENEW effort means that diocesan leadership makes RENEW available to any parish wishing to become involved. A RENEW cluster effort is when a cluster of interested parishes with the blessing of the bishop work directly with the RENEW International Team. A strength of RENEW is that it goes far beyond providing extensive materials and leadership manuals. Accompanying these are thorough training programs and ongoing pastoral support. Based on its pastoral experience, the RENEW Team believes that the combination of all three of these elements, which it uniquely provides, is needed for a successful parish evangelization effort. RENEW small communities materials appear in English, Spanish, French (Haitian and Canadian), Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Tagalog, Italian, Polish, Portuguese. A set of small community materials is designed for the African-American community. Materials have also been prepared for hearing and sight-impaired participants, as well as a special adaptation for Prison Ministry In a short period of two years, RENEW has spread to over 50 dioceses with approximately 2,000 parishes, involving five million people in the overall process.
