YOUTH MINISTRY

Youth and Young Adult Director Rachel Swenson

Youth ministry at St. Charles is the response of the Church community to young people’s needs & the sharing of the unique gifts of youth with the larger community. Youth Ministry is:

  • To youth: the Catholic community exercising its pastoral role in meeting young people’s needs.
  • With youth: Young people sharing with adults a common responsibility to carry out the church’s mission.
  • By youth: Young people exercising their own ministry to others by virtue of their gifts.
  • For youth: Adult youth ministers attempting to interpret & advocate for the needs & concerns of youth.

Two goals of Youth Ministry:

      (1)   To foster the personal & spiritual growth of each young person.
(2)   To draw young people to responsible participation in the life, mission, & work of the faith community.

Youth ministry has two main areas of focus, the junior high (grades 6 thru 8) and high school (grades 9 thru 12).  Junior High School meets every Wednesday night from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm with the first half of the session focusing on catechesis and the second half being social time for interaction and community building. High School youth group meets from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm and is similar in structure.  Both groups also have outside activities on the weekends such as social activities (movie nights, youth conferences, etc.) and service activities (Christmas in April, Angel program, food pantry, etc.)

CONFIRMATION PREPARATION

This program consists of a two year process where candidates meet bi-monthly from September to May on Sunday afternoons (2:00-3:30) in order to prepare themselves to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. These sessions consist of material taken from the Catechism and based on the different areas of Creed, Morality, Prayer, and the Sacraments.  Candidates must attend all classes, youth group, must perform service in the community, and must be sixteen at the time of Confirmation in order to participate and receive the sacrament.

YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY

This ministry is aimed at those 18-35 years of age and is intended to try to connect them with Jesus, with the Church, with the mission of the Church, and to connect them with their peers in the community. This group meets every Tuesday night from 7:30 to 9:00 PM whether formal or not and does anything from movie viewing and dinner, to discussing current issues, to performing service projects for the parish.  Major activities include annual Parish Easter Egg Hunt, spaghetti dinner and bingo, and summer co-ed softball.
