YOUTH MINISTRY

Youth and Young Adult Director Rachel Swenson

Youth ministry at St. Charles is the response of the Church community to young people’s needs and the sharing of the unique gifts of youth with the larger community. Youth Ministry is:

  • To youth: the Catholic community exercising its pastoral role in meeting young people’s needs.
  • With youth: Young people sharing with adults a common responsibility to carry out the church’s mission.
  • By youth: Young people exercising their own ministry to others by virtue of their gifts.
  • For youth: Adult youth ministers attempting to interpret & advocate for the needs and concerns of youth.

Two goals of Youth Ministry:

      (1)   To foster the personal & spiritual growth of each young person.
(2)   To draw young people to responsible participation in the life, mission, & work of the faith community.

Youth ministry has two main areas of focus, the junior high (grades 6 thru 8). Junior High School meets every Wednesday night from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm with fellowship and Bible Study. High school (grades 9 thru 12).  High School youth group meets from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Sunday nights and is similar in structure.  Both groups also have outside activities on the weekends such as social activities (movie nights, youth conferences, etc.) and service activities (vary monthly)

CONFIRMATION PREPARATION

This program consists of a two year process in order to prepare them to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. These sessions consist of material taken from the Catechism and based on the different areas of Creed, Morality, Prayer, and the Sacraments.  Candidates must attend all classes, youth group, must perform service in the community, and must be sixteen at the time of Confirmation in order to participate and receive the sacrament.

To register for Confirmation classes one must at least be entering 9th grade in the ’08-’09 school year. Registration will begin in August alongside CFP registration.

YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY

This ministry is aimed at those 18-39 years of age and is intended to try to connect them with Jesus, with the Church, with the mission of the Church, and to connect them with their peers in the community. This group meets every Thursday night from 7:00 to 9:00 PM whether formal or not and does anything from movie viewing and dinner, to discussing current issues, to performing service projects for the parish.  Major activities include Theology on Tap and OLOG Young Adult weekend and a YA Retreat at Our Lady of the Lake retreat house.

Young Adults will meet on the 4th Tursday of each month at 8:00pm for Theology on Tap at the Belle Isle Brewery.  This is currently scheduled to run from January through June 2009.
